For point and shoots I would have to go against the grain as a Nikon fanboy and actually recommend a Canon. Aside from gimmicky features and what not, I have to admitt as much as I dislike to that the Canon P&S are superior to Nikons. Things change once you get into the DSLR world but for a point and shoot it would be hard to be a SD800,850 for pure point and shoot quaility. The SD1000 and 1100s arent bad either, they do leave alot to be desired in the options department. Also the G8,9 and 10 are nothing to scoff at either. If you were to get a point and shoot from Nikon one of the few worth it are the P80. Also the D40, 50 and 60 are considered by some as P&S on steroids due to their size, very small and compact quite a punch for what they squeeze into the little body. Anyhow, to get back to the original point you could pick up an older Canon SD800 or so and get a water proof case for it for being around the water and still come in under 300 dollars. It would also beat the pants off optically the olympus and panasonix models that are speficily made waterproof.
